Helping Companies Improve Performance.

Shanks Consulting is a professional organisation set up to aid businesses around the improve productivity, efficiency and overall performance. We are available to provide solutions to complex production management problems and issues.

Manufacturing and Service Industries.

Our Professional Engineers provide support and training within the above sectors. We specialise in several fields; Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), Statistical Process Control (SPC), Process Improvement & Problem Resolution, Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and Business Modeling and Simulation.

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). Focused Equipment Improvement is one of the main pillars of TPM. The aim of Focused Equipment Improvement (FEI) is to increase the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) by addressing specific equipment losses. The method "focuses" on equipment maintenance problems and seeks to identify the main root causes of the problems, going beyond basic maintenance in order to improve equipment performance and capability.

Statistical Process Control (SPC). Statistical Process Control was developed by a number of academics (most notably W. H. Shewart) in the 1930s. SPC monitors the variables and attributes of processes and products in order to detect change with the goal of establishing optimum process parameters to achieve optimum product quality. Shanks Consulting helps businesses in this field by providing tailored SPC training packages and implementing organisation specific SPC systems.

Process Improvement & Problem Resolution. The phrases "Process Improvement" and "Problem Resolution" have been given a lot of lip service without real action within modern businesses. Process Improvement should involve all levels of employees within a company, the more that employees understand about specific improvement techniques then the greater chance the company will have to continually improve. Process Improvement can be classified under several main methods; subjective, pictorial, complex and statistical.

Total Productive Maintenance (TPM). Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) was introduced as a concept in 1971 by the Japanese Institute for Plant Maintenance (JIPM). The concept challenges the view that maintenance should be left to one department (i.e. maintenance). The view is that everyone is responsible for maintenance in order to keep the plant and facility running at optimum levels and therefore reducing losses generally occurring within a manufacturing facility.

Business Modeling and Simulation. Simulation modelling consists of accurately building a graphical analytical model of a system (eg. manufacturing facility, supply chain, distribution centre, hospital's emergency room etc.) The process involves gathering data and then constructing a model using simulation software to accurately represent each part (i.e. machine centre, operator, conveyor etc.) of the model analytically. Simulation uses statistics to predict the uncertainty of real life situations, in doing so, an accurate representation can be detailed allowing a greater understanding of the system being evaluated.
